Often times I'm asked "dude, why a Z24?". The answer? I really don't
know. I bought a '88 Z24 as my first car, with high miles on it (160 some
odd i think) and have driven that car to the hardest every single day, and
it has not dissapointed me to this day. Sure, its not a Porsche, or a
BMW, which, surely -- i could afford.... but, why bother when my
economy-box car can give me more thrills. Z24's arent a particularly FAST
car to start off with, but -- with some time and money and patience, you
can make yourself a pretty sweet car... Like my 3.1 Turbo. Pouds to
weight, it'll take on just about any V8 on the road.. (minus maybe
corvettes!).... but, hey -- thats enough ranting...
Here's some of the crap i've got in my cars..
My '88 Z24 Coupe:
Custom passengers side front fender
Custom bondo bodywork
Custom rust on the doors
Custom interior (out of an '89, made a fold-down rear seat)
Kick-ass sound system - (note: been sacraficed for new Z24)
Center console out of an '87 Cavalier Sedan
Radio support out of an '89 Z24
Shift knob out of '90 Z24 Coupe
Missing headliner -- i hate sags
Interesting Facts:
In 1988 GM produced 53 Z24's with a special package, for rally racing.
Included in this package was a solid-rear swaybar, a stiffer front sway
bar, a 2.8 liter V6 engine with precision balanced pistons, a 5 speed
Muncie-Getrag close-ratio racing transmission, high-flow water pump, 180
deg. thermostat, and no sound deadening material, or rustproofing... (the
later of the two is more evident!) Anyhow, mine's one of the 53, and
they're a PAIN to find parts for! I took this off the road in July with
199,650 miles on it, and still running strong!
My '93 Z24 Coupe Convertible:
Memphis 350 series 3.5's in the front
Pioneer TS6975 6x9's in the rear
Alpine 7845 head unit w/ 4.5 volt preouts
Jensen 500w amp w/ crossover and remote gain control
1 12" Cerwin Vega VEGA woofer
12" ported Q-logic enclosure for the VEGA
8 guage power wire
Custom Paint
PERFORMANCE:
3.1 McLaren-Built V6 from a '90 TGP.
Heads w/ Race Valvejob
Garrett T25 Turbo
Relocated battery
Detailed engine compartment (work in progress...)
Interesting Facts:
In 1993, Chevrolet brought the convertible back. Well over 4,000
Cavaliers were produced in convertible form (with as well as 11,000
coupes) but just 50 were produced with a black convertible top. Of those 50,
5 of the cars
were equipped with a 5 speed Muncie overdrive transmission. I just so
happened to find mine at an auto auction, hit in the front end (rolled
down a hill and hit a phone pole!!! :() One man's junk is another man's
treasure. This is my baby!
